Mark the waterline on tile with tape, set a bucket of pool water on a step so its inside level matches the pool, and compare both after twenty-four hours with the pump conditions written down. Evaporation acts on both, so a pool dropping faster than the bucket suggests a genuine loss. Wind, splash-out, a backwash valve left ajar, heavy swimming and a working auto-fill can all distort the result, so repeat it. Metering the refill water is the other test worth running, since a sharp rise in what the pool consumes says the same thing from the billing side.
Expectations need calibrating before anyone spends money. Published Arizona water figures put the average annual evaporation rate around Phoenix and Tucson at roughly six feet, enough that a typical sixteen-thousand-gallon pool loses close to its whole volume across a year. Half an inch overnight in late June is not automatically a defect. A quarter inch a day in February is a much stronger signal than the same reading in July. Phoenix Water Services says its Sewer Fee Review may adjust a sewer fee when higher-than-usual water use is caused by broken plumbing or outdoor irrigation equipment. For the 2026 review, requests received more than 60 days after the July bill date are not eligible, and prior years cannot be adjusted.

The Arizona Geological Survey says groundwater withdrawal can drive land subsidence and earth-fissure formation, and lists Maricopa County among counties that host earth fissures. It notes that fissures can damage utility lines, roads, and canals.
Why it matters: Ground movement is a reason to carefully evaluate a buried water-line route when testing points outside the house. It does not diagnose a fissure or establish the cause of a specific leak; the pipe still needs evidence-based detection at the property.
